Earl Grey only in cellophane. Foil serves the history.

Evaporating qualities of essential oils can be an asset used, among others, in perfumery, herbal medicine, aromatherapy and in spices. Yet, in case of tea they cause loss of flavour and film wrinkling. A solution to this issue is using cellophane.

The legend says that English aristocrat Charles II Earl Grey, during his journey to China, helped save Mandarin’s son, who was drowning. In gratitude he received a box of black tea that he took with him back to England. Another version of the story is that during the long shipping to England the tealeaves got moist and began to ferment. In order to reduce the unpleasant smell they were mixed with aromatic oil obtained from bergamot orange peel.

Regardless of which story is true, Earl Grey tea has a significant number of supporters, who appreciate its specific, unique flavour. However, only a few consumers realise that the essential oils occurring in the tea may leak, which not only influence our sense of smell but also affect the chemical surrounding.

Earl Gray tea brands available on the market can be packed in various ways. Along the teas packed in metal boxes one may also purchase cardboard packaging containing tea in polybags, or sometimes tealeaves packed in cardboard are additionally wrapped in foil. In both cases when foil appears (sealed polybag inside or cardboard wrapped in foil on the outside) we are dealing with bilateral BOPP polypropylene. Volatile chemicals from bergamot oils escaping from the tea interact chemically with polypropylene causing it to wrinkle. This interaction can be compared to an effect of plasticizers on plastic. As a result you can often see on the shop shelves unaesthetic Earl Grey packaging with wrinkled foil. A solution to this is using a good old cellophane that is still manufactured by British company Innovia Films and available also in Poland. Due to the fact that it is  produced from the pulp ("liquid paper") is it resistant to many types of chemicals and mineral oils. Whether packed directly in cellophane bag or in a cardboard and then wrapped in it, the tea will still look attractive and encouraging. The use of cellophane has another advantage. Natural properties of polypropylene are good resistance to water penetration (moisture), yet a very weak resistance to oxygen (gases, smells). Earl Grey tea brands, whose essence is flavour, easily lose their aromatic properties when packed in polypropylene. On the other hand, cellulose films have a natural resistance to smell infiltration and to steam. Considering this, using cellophane will simultaneously increase the aesthetical properties, extend the shelf life and improve the quality of Earl Grey tea available on the market.
