Coral cardboard. Hexacomb for Perot Museum.

The Perot Museum in London hosted an amazing, 370 square meter wide, display of underwater ecosystem made of cardboard. The “Recycling Reef” sculpture was not only encouraging visitors to creative recycling by showing them both algae forests growing from the bottom of the sea, as well as the imprisoned ship wreck. Its aim was also to create their own cardboard sculptures and for that the exhibition organizers created a special place where thousands of marine animals and plants are daily produced which decorate the Reef or individual houses. The used material is a few-thousand-sheet-long wood fiber board, which had been shaped as honeycomb. It was donated by Hexacomb enterprise and normally it is used for the production of protective transport packaging. Despite its inconspicuous appearance, it is very robust and provides good cushioning. These characteristics make it ideally suited as exhibition material. “Hexacomb is known in North America and Europe as a reliable and environmentally friendly packaging material. However, it hasn’t had its premiere as an educational tool, so we are delighted that it has become a part of an interactive exhibition at Perot Museum- summarized Darlene Kober, director of global marketing at Hexacomb.
