Conquering the world. HP Inkjet printing

During HP Do More meeting in Brussels the representative of printing industry could see the advantage of inkjet over offset printing on their own eyes.

Hewlett-Packard is developing its inkjet printing offer – since drupa 2008 they invested over 1 billion dollars in it. The results are already visible: in 2008 the value of production inkjet printing was around 30 billion dollars, but till 2014 it is supposed to reach 50 billion dollars. Those numbers have direct influence on reality.

The CPI company recently broke the record of orderds realised in one month – over 100 milion pages printed on an HP inkjet machine. This situation might even improve with the progress of users’ awareness of the advantage of inkjet over offset. “So far the printers were deterred by the higher inkjet inks price. Yet more and more of them came to realize, that this technology offers bigger possibilities with comparable printing quality with offset” – said dr Sean Smyth from Smithers Pira during the HP Do More meeting in Brussels, where HP presented its inkjet portfolio. Until now inkjet was limited to commercial, transactional and direct mail printing. Still with this technology’s development it can be possible to print also POS, banners, leaflets, posters or OCR applications. However‚ by far the biggest benefit of inkjet is profitable short run printing with lower start-up costs per copy and much better visual effect when printing magazines, labels or personalized ads.

Fast as inkjet

These words were confirmed by Jo Van de Weghe, sales and marketing manager at Symeta, which uses two HP Color Inkjet Web Presses: T400 and T230. He referred to the order they carried out for Ethias – an insurance company which wanted to prepare a personalized set of „welcoming” catalogues for customers who purchased their insurance online. Due to the possibilities of inkjet machines, around 2000 magazine copies per month were printed in a very short time, with the content addressing the individual needs of each recipient – each magazine had up to 70 mln possible content combinations. As a result, 62% of the people who received the magazine read it and of those people, 20% requested quotes for another type of insurance in addition to the one that they had already purchased. This was more than double the usual figure. According to Jo Van de Weghe, the decision to invest in HP T400 was motivated by its speed (122 m/min), stability and print quality (1200 dpi). The machine enables printing up to 100 mln full-color images per month on web width up to 1066,8 mm.

Paper stars

Arjowiggins, International Paper, Mondi, Sappi and many other vendors showed a broad list of papers dedicated to different possibilities of HP Inkjet Web Presses. The first of which promoted the new family of 100 percent recycled papers, which combine quality and ecological benefits. “The advantage of Cocoon and Cyclus papers are manifested not only in the excellent inkjet printing on coated and premium pigmented material, but also in raw fibre savings due to the ability to process cellulose fibers up to eight times” – summarized John Cooper, customer support director in Arjowiggins Graphics, part of Antalis Group: “Moreover, the recycling production absorbs up to twice less energy and trice less water in comparison with the production of new paper”. For transactional printing the manufacturer recommends uncoated Cocoon Preprint and Cyclus Preprint paper, for transpromotional – Cocoon Jet (dye inks) and Cocoon Jet Pro (pigmented inks matching HP Color PRO technology), while for transpromotional, publishing and direct mail printing – coated Cocoon Jet Silk (dye and pigmented).

On the other hand their competitor’s portfolio – International Paper - consists of two paper types: JetStar and JetSet. These substrates were created especially for HP T-Series presses’ needs and are perfect for publishing, direct mail and transpromotional printing. JetStar surface-treated paper was designed for use with pigmented inks and delivers exceptional colour stability. JetSet offers superior whiteness, opacity and optical density for both dye-based and pigmented inks. When these substrates are used on machines from International Paper partner vendors, printers can achieve better print-on-demand quality.

Symeta uses HP T400 inkjet machine which ensures the speed of 122 m/min on web width up to 1066,8 mm, stability and expected printing quality of resolution up to 1200 dpi.

Dye or pigmented?

An equally interesting offer was presented by Mondi Paper. Its portfolio included fast drying papers with pigmented surface for dye and pigmented inks (DNS enhanced color inkjet), with smooth surface imitating coated paper (DNS high-speed inkjet CF) or rough papers with a natural feel (DNS high-speed inkjet NF). Worth mentioning is also the special totally chlorine free BIO TOP 3 material, with no optical brightening agents for excellent warm color tones reproduction (e.g. reds). The off-white paper is not only ideal for book printing, but also absorbs water faster and speeds up the work on small printing machines. Mondi has also 100 percent recycled Nautilus paper which differs with high-white for rich color contrasts. Thanks to such a rich offer, the manufacturer allows its customers enhanced publishing, transactional‚ direct mail and promotional materials printing or even OCR applications.

“According to our research, in the next 10 years the number of offset printers will decline about 10,2 percent, while digital will rise about 68,12 percent” – predicted Francoise Accou, product service manager digital in Sappi. The company’s answer to this trend is new Jaz coated inkjet paper, manufactured in cooperation with HP, for which the feel and visual benefits give a photographic application the color quality of offset printing. Due to a thick coated layer the material has barrier properties which don’t allow the ink to sink too deep in the substrate. The paper is certified by FSC and PEFC and has a satin or glossy surface which fits perfectly to commercial, promotional and direct mail printing.

Color is what matters

However, the paper is just a part of the solution, as Michael J. Barisonek, vice president sales and marketing at Epic Products, convinced HP Do More participants in Brussels. He presented the latest Epic CT-660 line for UV and aqueous coats, supporting gloss, satin and matte finishes. This is an easy to maintain, efficient and cost-effective device that can work with HP inkjet T200, T300 and T400 production lines, as well as off-line. The Epic CT-660 machine can also pre-treat primer Saphire and DigiPrime for the HP Indigo printing process.

At the end, Carolina Altafulla, R&D engineer from HP in San Diego, explained how the corresponding color optimization allows printers to achieve the best digital printing results. One of the latest solutions is color profile which guarantees that the brand colors will always look the same on all printed promotional materials. Another step to ensure the photographic printing quality is choosing the finest paper – the best solution would be if it matches the HP ColorPRO technology‚ which accelerates the ink absorption and its drying process, following the production speed. For those digital printers who want to prepare a sample print for the client, the HP Designjet is ideal. It prints the job according to its design saved in HP SmartStream Web Press Color Proofer allowing the customer to see the proof and correct it before printing. HP Designjet is a convenient tool for economic offline proofing. “The customers are used to the look and feel of offset. Therefore inkjet technology should mimic it” – summarized Carolina Altafulla.

Who are we?

It protects, expands the expiry date, persuades. Packaging. Influenced by an intriguing design, often we decide to buy something on impulse, that wasn’t to be found on our shopping list. We are tempted by their beautiful forms, intrigued by embossed printing made by innovative, cutting-edge technology and by the use of unusual materials.
