Digital history. The preview of Xeikon’s solutions at LabelExpo 2013.

Until now dry toner was not expected to be able to work with temperature-sesitive substrates. Following requests from user base, Xeikon specifically developed the ICE toner which broadens the possibilities of digital printing.

The first full colour digital webfed press was introduced 20 years ago. However, it was at drupa 2008 when the company decided to focus on labels and created the first Xeikon 3000 model (nowadays there are five alternative variants), whose sales increased by 50 percent during past years, which gave Xeikon a title of the number two supplier of presses in the digital label and packaging market. What will they present at LabelExpo 2013 in Brussels? „We are not focusing on new machines, but rather on new solutions enabling their modernization and adjusting to the growing packaging customers’ needs. That is why the biggest novelty will be the ICE toner”, said Frank Jacobs, Marketing Communications Manager at Xeikon.

In order to know better customers’ experiences associated with the use of digital printing machines from 3000 series, Xeikon has been organizing several editions of informal learning platform – Xeikon Café. During one of such meetings Simon Smith, CS Labels Managing Director, was telling his story about a family business that had significantly transformed within the past 10 years – from hardly profitable silk screen printing house, through flexo printer and finally to globally awarded digital label manufacturer. The beginnings weren’t easy – when he took over management of the company he couldn’t tell the difference between the flexographic and offset printing, because until then he had been dealing with bank management. Moreover, during one of the first meetings with one of our most important clients in 2000, he heard that he would lose the business in the following years to competition from China. In fact that’s what happened, despite transferring to flexographic printing 2004 and being competitive in terms of prices. The company was aware that they would never be flexographic experts – the team lacked years of experience in order to achieve high quality print. For this reason, among others, the CS Label management decided in 2008 to buy the first Xeikon 3300 digital narrow web label printing machine, which was soon joined by another one (2009) and until now the company possesses three of them with four finishing units and three speed upgrades. They invested in five in total, but two of them were replaced by the latest models. “Although we had never been good enough in flexographic printing, we were able to surprise the competition by investing in digital printing. The best proof is the fact that the client we had lost in 2004 while manufacturing flexo labels returned to us after we transferred to digital printing”, summarized Simon Smith.

 

CS Labels investment in three digital bale printing machines – including two narrow-web Xeikon’s 3300 and one wide-web Xeikon 3500 – was donated by the British Regional Growth Fund. Xeikon 3500 runs at a top production speed of 19,2 m/min and variable web width (ranging from 250 mm up to 516 mm). Moreover, it is equipped with the Varilane function allowing simultaneous print of two types of labels with different web lengths.

ICE Age

The meeting during Xeikon Café was an opportunity to present the novelties that are going to be center-piece at the LabelExpo 2013 in Brussels. The most important of these – ICE dry toner – was designed for label manufacturers working on temperature sensitive materials, like popular in food sector thermoplastics, and polyethylene. This material determines 10 percent of European label market, especially in cosmetic industry. So far they couldn’t use the Xeikon machines, because the thermo-sensitive materials could get damaged or deformed during fusing. The new product is based on proven QA-I technology and, except the possibility of printing on an unconventional surface without priming (the preparation of the printed substrate), offers high printing quality, good light resistance and one-pass opaque white. Furthermore, it is environmentally friendly due to no solvents emission and was approved for contact with food. The toner will be available in broad distribution from Q4 2013, was adapted to all Xeikon 300 label digital presses (although it requires latest MyPress interface) and its price won’t differ from the original QA-I technology products.

 

Digital is online

Among new products a number of IT solutions for improvement of the use of Xeikon 3000 digital printing series will be also presented. One of them is Xeikon ColorControl, an application based on cloud computing that allows the users to obtain repeatable and predictable colors with a possibility to simulate the drop print on customers’ request.  It enables the project to be sent to the cloud, analyzed and scaled until an optimal CYMK profile is achieved, ensuring the exact color combination as the original. Another smart IT is ColorMagic, a tool that allows achieving premium effect due to the choice of 260 different metallic colors and special effect on metalized paper, including water marks and holograms. Significant changes will be introduced also by Vectorizer, an integrated Web2LabelProduction part (available in Xeikon 3300), helping the automation of label laser cutting process in small batches by creating a detailed profile of the cutting.
