Banned in Europe. Greiner Packaging rejects BPA

Due to assumptions that bisphenol A (BPA) may be the cause of diseases, international companies related to plastic industry start to withdraw BPA from the food packaging production process. In the near future Greiner Packaging is supposed to join them and ban using BPA in their food packaging. The replacement of the raw material is going to be introduced especially to 19-litre bottles for mineral water, which are currently manufactured from polycarbonate derivatives. As Greiner Packaging’s spokesperson explained, the decision to ban BPA was driven by the fact that an increasing number of European countries discuss the safety of using BPA (France and Sweden) and prepare themselves to pass regulations to ban it. Considering the fact that most of the plants belonging to Greiner Packaging are located in Europe (currently 32), the company wants to be a pioneer to implement the regulations and simultaneously show that they are concerned with the consumers’ well being. An alternative to BPA ought to be TritanT copolyester, supplied by Eastman Chemical, which does not contain this organic compound. Additionally, it is crystal-clear, heat-resistant and allows for  high degree of design flexibility.
